SIDE B

With Dev Kohli’s lyrics and Dilip Sen and Sameer Sen’s foot-tapping tune, this song was a chartbuster even before Mehul Kumar thought of making the movie.

The magic of first love has never been captured so lyrically as in this one:

‘Pagal huwa huwa huwa,
Deewana huwa huwa huwa
O jane mujhe yeh kya huwa’

To which the gyrating Tabu replies:

‘O ladka tu ek patakha,
Ladki main ek dhamaka’

One minute silence for these lines please. Nana ko pataka bola. This deserves a bit of misty-eyed applause fellas! *clap clap clap*

14Nana puts ze swag on and how! Just look at that awesomeness oozing from every inch of that image:

15

Cool shades. Check.
Cool jacket. Check.
Cool track pants. Check.
Yo shoes. Check.
Cool ponytail. Check.
Monkey cap. Check.

16Tum log hass rahe ho? Sharam karo! Love knows no boundaries, remember??? Love is indeed quite blind, as this song teaches us. Now go home and write that 400 times. Silly peepuls!

The choreography is of course mind-blowing with Nana pulling off some incredibly cool moves in clothes that were later borrowed by Sonu Nigam in Jaani Dushman (click here to know how that turned out!)

There’s a yellow tractor thingum that goes around the dancing lovers randomly in between, what had just calmly been parked in the background just a second before. Randomly, did I say? Na, Na. What I meant was that it is a metaphorical depiction of the overwhelming happiness in their hearts that makes them run in circles deliriously. Beautiful imagery, hain ni?

gif8

Cut to next scene. Our dude walks in with a swagger in a long coat and hat, presumably after stepping out of the helicopter that can be seen in the background.

17

What charm. What swagger. Dekho toh!

18

Tabu and Nana then have a jacket flipping competition, and of course with that lean, mean bod, Nana wins!

gif9

And then Nana walks in in dungarees. Silence. Epicness alert.

19

After declaring their love almost everywhere possible: in a car, on an empty road, on a foggy hill, on a river bank, near a bonfire, over logs of wood, on a rocky mountain, grassy slopes, lady (Tabu, mind you) tells NANA: ‘Main sach keh rahi hun Ajit. Tum mujhe bahut achhe lagte ho. Hmm’.

20

Featuring:
Nana the Studboy Round 2
Helicopter on Loan from Yashraj
Amisha Patel from the future (Kaho Na Pyaar Hai…) as Tabu
10 Easy Hair-Dos for Boys with Medium-Length Hair
How to Pull Off Monkey Caps like a Boss (Vol. 2)

P.S. And as Nana taught us in Krantiveer, love knows no age. Or looks. Or fashion sense. Or any sense. So:

let us digest all that crap,
and together do the love rap

Unsung Studboys: Nana Patekar Special Part 1

Kyunki Nana Bhi Kabhi Studboy Tha. You don’t believe me? Read on.

So well, somebody says ‘Nana Patekar’ and you think of the angry man drumming his head in frustration and shooting people. But he was not always that way. He should have been the pin-up boy on your wall and you missed out! I have two goldmines to showcase in today’s show and tell that will finally reveal the truth!

1

Now both are from the 1990s Golden Collection and redefined the idea of being ‘cool’. This was when hiphop and rap made its first foray into Indian cinema.

3SIDE A

So ‘Love Rap’ from Krantiveer, the chartbuster from 1994! Starring pretty boy Atul Agnihotri

4and the 90s ki bombshell Mamta

5But no one does it better than our very own Nana! He is the dapper, brooding hottie in the corner who gets hit on endlessly by hot babes!

6

Okay, not babes exactly. But he IS hit on okay? And she WAS a bombshell once upon a time okay? Okay?

So Atul and Mamta are burning the dance floor with their swag moves.

gif1And keeping to Hindi cinema tradition, the electrical guitars of course are played with no jack/amp/chords.

gif2a

The lyrics by Sameer were pathbreaking. So way ahead of its time. He brought in rap way before the Honey Singhs and the Raftaars came to the party. Anand-Milind bring the words alive with their foot-tapping music. The song is a profound comment on the malady of love. The effect it has on the human mind is like a fever: it grips it entirely and leaves it incapable of sensing, feeling, doing anything else. Beautifully rendered in these lines:

‘maine dekha jab
teri nazro ke through
kabhi hundred-one,
kabhi hundred-two
uss dinse hua
ye fever shuru
kabhi hundred-one,
kabhi hundred-two’

The young lovers are dancing and poor Nana sits getting drunk on Thums Up.

7

The pub is interestingly designed like a gladiator ring and all ze peepuls sit in ze galleries in front of booze bottles like a boss. Boy and babe. With one arm distance in between. Coz that’s how we roll, bitches!

8And then pretty boy has a seizure on the dance floor and dies of the trauma caused by thinking of watching the footage of the song later.

9Just kidding. He is writhing on the dance floor with kabhi hundred one, kabhi hundred two.

And then random dance break by unnamed bare-chested hotness:

gif4Following which the old hag from 101 Dalmatians walks in:

10

and spots our man and goes ‘Wow’
She asks him to dance, gets rejected and then casts a spell on him. Witchy witch!
And Nana can dance saala!

gif5

Some classic lines soon follow:

‘you know my age ain’t thirty plus nine
oh that means you are old wine!’

‘na ishq mein ho generation gap
hum mil ke karenge
aaj love rap’

So folks, before Pyaar mein Twist, Cheeni Kum and Bade Achhe Lagte Hain, here was Nana screaming at the top of his voice that there is no age for love! Umar nahi dil dekho yaar.

11

Getting a glimpse of Bindu’s legs, Nana goes crazy, throws his jacket and transforms into Nataraj. Arre pencil nahi, stupid, bhagwan! Siva! Jeez!

12

Horny aunty is also on a roll.

13

Of course, despite all that awesomeness that Nana exuded, this lady in the orange jacket steals the show. Just see those moves. That is what epic looks like. Watch and learn.

gif6Seeing which Nana runs away to practice. FIVE years he works on his swag. And then he comes back in 1999 with sheer epicness in Kohram – ‘Pagal Hua’ (which I will save for Part 2 of this post).

Featuring:
Nana the Studboy
Special appearance by Studboy Atul Agnihotri (who will get his own post soon)
Bappi Lahiri’s Gold
Bindu re Bindu
